Getting Around

Metro

The city now has 2 metro lines with plans to expand. Line 1 stretches east/west from Luohu Kouan (Luohu Pass) to Window of the World, while Line 4 runs north/south from Huanggang Kouan (Huanggang Pass) to Shaoniangong (Children's Palace). Transfer between the two lines at Huizhan Zhongxin (Convention and Exhibition Center).

Taxi

Shenzhen taxis are either red or green. Red taxis only travel within the city's four inner districts of Futian, Luogang, Yantian and Nanshan. For the other two districts, Baoan and Longgang, only green taxis are available. Price varies according to the color of the taxis and the time of day.

To and from Shenzhen

Visitors reach Shenzhen by air, rail, sea or road. A relatively small city, Shenzhen enjoys convenient transportation both in the city and among the surrounding areas. (Transportation Bureau hotline: 0755 8322 8000)

Air

Shenzhen Baoan International Airport lies 32 kilometers from the city center (80 RMB taxi ride). The airport houses over 100 domestic and international airlines, connecting Shenzhen to over 80 other cities around China and the world. Buses run from the airport to the city center and Shenzhen Railway Station. City center-bound buses leave every 20 minutes (50-minute trip). Buses headed to the Railway Station leave every 15 minutes (40-minute trip).

Train

Shenzhen Railway Station acts as an important transportation hub connecting Hong Kong to Mainland China. More than 40 trains travel between Shenzhen and Guangzhou every day. Note: the frequent T-trains are faster than the K-trains. Shenzhen West Railway Station is in the city's Nanshan District. The small station services a handful of long-distance destinations, such as Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province.

Bus

Several long-distance bus stations in Shenzhen operate routes around Guangdong Province and beyond to cities like Guangzhou, Chaozhou, Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Hebei, Anhui, Sanya, and Chengdu. The three major stations are Yinhu Bus Station (0755 8243 6053), Futian Bus Station (0755 8358 7526) and Luohu Bus Station (0755 8232 1670).

Boat

Eight passenger ports line Shenzhen's harbor including Yantian, Shekou, and Chiwa. The Shekou Port located at the intersection of Gang'ao Dadao and Nanhai Dadao in Nanshan District marks the most convenient travel point, with regular lines to and from Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Macau, Hong Kong and Kowloon.

By City-Bus

The large quantity of vehicles exerts a lot of pressure on Shenzhen's transportation situation at present, especially in the commuter time. Therefore, for visitors, you had better arrange your schedule appropriately out of the traffic congestion. Shenzhen's urban bus system consists of regular buses, mini-buses and double-decker sightseeing buses. There are about 8,000 buses running on about 400 lines, but since the large population, it seems that they are still not enough for this city. Usually, the numbers of the buses begin with 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 are the middle and mini buses. The buses' number added with N mean that they will run late at night. Finally, the buses' fare of Shenzhen is higher than the other cities of China. Follows are the sightseeing lines:

Tourist line: It departs from Shenzhen Railway Station to the Future World, passing by Diwang Mansion, Honey Lake, Splendid China, China Folk Culture Villages, Happy Valley, Window of the World, etc.

Tourist lines at night: There are two night lines which pass through the main streets of the city. They will start at 19:30 every day respectively from Renmin South Road and Aiguo Road. The whole journey needs about 2 hours.

Shopping line: Some famous shopping centers are available on this line, such as Women's World, Mao Ye Department and Bu Ji Free Market. You can take the bus at Yinhu Mansion, Bubei Road.

By Subway

Shenzhen planes to established eight subway lines by which passengers can get to surrounding cities and Hong Kong Airport. The first phase of the plan has been completed. There are in total twenty subway stations. At present, only parts of subway lines of 1 and 4 are put into use.

The Line 1 runs between Luohu and Window of the World, from the east to the west passing by Guo Mao (International Trade Center), Lao Jie, Da Ju Yuan (Shenzhen Grand Theater), Ke Xue Guan (Science Museum), Huang Qiang Lu, Gangxia, Hui Zhan Zhong Xin (Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center), Gou Wu Gong Yuan (Coco Park), Xiang Mi Hu (Honey Lake), Che Gong Miao (Che Kung Temple), Zhu Zi Lin, Hua Qiao Cheng Dong (East of Overseas Chinese Town) and Hua Qiao Cheng.

The south-to-north Line 4 runs from between Huanggang and the Shao Nian Gong (Children' Palace), passing by Fu Min, Hui Zhan Zhong Xin and Shi Min Zhong Xin (Citizen Center). Line 1 and Line 4 are built in the form of a cross and they meet each other in the Hui Zhan Zhong Xin Station.

The fare is according to the sections every of which includes five stop stations. You should pay CNY2 for the first three stop stations and CNY1 is added when you enter into the next section. The whole Line 1 will cost CNY5. The operating hours range from 06:30 to 23:00. During some important festivals, the service time will be prolonged to 24:00.

By Taxi

You can find a taxi anywhere in Shenzhen's streets to make your trip of this city easier. There are three kinds of taxi running in this city for you to choose. One is in red color the price of which is CNY12.5 for the first 3 kilometers (about 1.86 miles) and then CNY2.4 for every additional kilometer (about 0.62 mile). The yellow taxi has the same fee schedule as the red on. The yellow taxicabs shall only run within the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen while the red ones can run within and out of the zone.

The other one is in green color that only runs out of the Special Economic Zone. Its price is CNY7 for the first 2 kilometers (about 1.24 miles) and the distance surcharge is CNY1.6 per additional kilometer. Finally, for both of them, CNY0.8 will be added to your fare for every waiting time of one minute.

Tips:

1.The night-driving taxi fare is CNY16 for the first three kilometers after 23:00.

2.Part of Shenzhen taxis can pay by swiping Shenzhen Tong Card which is issued by the government for people to take public inner city transportation. It is mainly used while taking subways and city-buses in the past offering some discounts. However, part of the taxis accepts the payment by this kind of card.

3.There are not motorcycles operating within the special zone, which can be found outside the zone. You had better not taking them for the sake of safety. If not clear about the city-bus routes, try to call 160 to inquiry the reliable information. It costs CNY1 per minute.

    Hello.
    1) May i know if taxis in Shenzhen allow for 5 passengers in one car(as in 3 adults and 2 children)?
    2) Sorry, but i would also like to know the taxi fare from Shenzhen International Airport to the Days Inn Shenzhen in Dongmen. Do i take the red or green taxi?
    Thank you.

  • Dear SIir/Madam
The car can hold three adults and two kids at the same time. One adults sit beside the driver with one kid sitting on his leg and three persons sit on the back seat.
It costs at least 100 Yuan from Shenzhen Baoan Airport to Dongmen

Taxi’s in Shenzhen are relatively expensive with a starting fee of 12.5¥. Taxi’s are seperated in three different classes by their color: red taxi’s are allowed to operate everywhere in Shenzhen, green taxis only outside the Special Economical Zone and yellow taxi’s only inside the SEZ.

  • Dear Sir/Madam
You can take taxies to your destination and the driver will drive you there. The taxies at Shenzhen Airport are all meter priced.
I’m very glad to help if you need any guide in Shenzhen, the price for that would be 200CNY.

Four taxies will not be enough for 15 people and the luggages. It will be troublesome if one taxi goes the wrong way

Where are you from? Can you give me your phone number?what’s your budget?
    When arrived?

We will be coming to HK in November and plan to go to Shenzhenfor 4 days. My husband will be playing golf at Mission Hills. I will be sightseeing/shopping/relaxing.
    1. since we will have a large golf bag with us, what is the most convenient way to get to shenzhen from hong kong or kowloon?
    2. If we stay at the Sheraton resort, is it easy for me to get into the city for shopping/sightseeing? Is it quick to get to the Mission hills golf course? OR
would it be better staying in the city at the Westin where I have public transportation as you have already pointed out so well, and then is it easy for my husband and golf bag to get to the mission hills golf course.
    3. Are there any individual guides I can contact for a one day orientation of Shenzhen for me?

By the way, I am very impressed with the depth of many of your answers on this web site.

  • Dear Sir/Madam
    Welcome to Shenzhen!
    1. Three ways to Shenzhen from HongKong:
    a) Take Hong Kong metro to Luohu Port of Shenzhen and take your golf bag with yourselves
    b) Bus is also a good option. There are long-distance buses between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Get off at Luohu Port and go through the customs.

    2. The Sheraton resort is located nearby Dameisha Beach Park in Yantian District in Shenzhen, the scene there is very beautiful. But it’s far from the downtown. It will take you at least two hours to the city center by taxi with the expense of about CNY200. And it won’t be easy to find a taxi.
It will take you a long time to go to Mission Hills by taxi or bus if you stay at Sheraton resort. And there are no direct buses to Mission Hills. By the way, the traffic there could be bad.
In my opinion, Sheraton resort is a place suitable for leisure, you can enjoy the sea water there. But it’s not good option for shopping and sightseeing.

    3. If you like, we will recommend individual guide for you. Wish you a good holiday in Shenzhen.

    Best Regards
    Brooks

Hi, I am a Singaporean planning to travel with my vietnamese girlfriend to Shenzhen & Zhuhai. Below are some doubts that I need to clarify:-

    1. My vietnames girlfriend hold a China Visa valid from 20.08.2010 to 20.11.2010 (she has not been to China, she applied the VISA in August but we postpone our trip), we are travelling between 17th to 21st November 2010. Is the VISA still valid for entry on 17.11.10? Or does she need to re-apply the VISA. Is there any problem travel to-and fro Shenzhen and Zhuhai, any special visa required?

    2. Upon arriving at Shenzeng International Airport on 17.11.2010 @ 1120 hr by Shenzhen Airlines from Ho Chi Minh Citty, what is the best and convenient way to get to Zhuhai Gongbei Port. Please provide cost for the options.

    3. Some website posted Shenzhen Airport to Zhuhai Gongbei Terminal on Buses no. 1, 2, 8, 9, 11, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 207, 601B, 601. Hi brooks…
can you explain how to go to downtown shenzhen from the shenzhen international airport? by metro… because i need to go to guo mao metro station from the airport… is there any metro near the shenzhen international airport? thankz

  • connie

    Hi Sir,
There is no metro near Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. If you want to go to Guomao metro station, you can take bus No. 330 and get off at Science Museum, then take the metro to Guomao metro station. It’ll take about 10 minutes by metro.

Best way to go to Guomao Station is take bus No. 330 and get off at Science Museum
The distance between Science Museum and Science Museum Station is 10meters only.
    You may rest assured!

  • D

    Hi connie…
do you mean take the 330 bus from the shenzhen airport and get off at science museum?
is the metro near the bus stop or still far?
how about the airport bus? will they stop at metro station?
and how long will it take from airport to the nearest metro station?
maybe i could take the nearest metro station from the airport…
    thanks…

Hello, I have a flight from HKIA @ 9:20am. Can you please advise what is the fastest way to HKIA from ShenZhen airport as I understand that the FuYong Terminal first ferry to HKIA Skypier is at 8:30am which does not give me sufficient time to catch my flight. I am travelling alone with a golf club and a luggage, so travelling by train via LuoWu would be incnvenient. Any suggestion for me to get to HKIA by 7:30am from ShenZhen ? How long does it take and how much would it cost if using a taxi or private transport. Any recommendation on company providing such services in ShenZhen airport ?

Hi brook! We will be in shenzhen on august 27 and 28. Our flight back home (philippines) would be from Hong Kong on august 29 at 10:15am. I would like to ask for your advice if it would be better to go to Hong Kong on aug. 28 to wait for our flight the following day or to go directly to HKIA from Shenzhen via ferry on the 29th. I understand that we have to be at the skypier 2 hours before our flight. The 1st ferry departs shekou at 7:45am arriving HKIA at 8:15am. Exactly 2 hours before our flight. Would our time be sufficient for the transfers? We have nothing to do in Hong Kong so we would prefer to go to HKIA directly from shenzhen if our time would be enough. Also, we will be taking a low cost carrier airline. What is the immigration procedure for passengers from shenzhen directly to HKIA? Please help us decide. Thanks in advance.

I need to go to Dongguan. Please advise the options and bus schedule if this is the recommended option. Thanks
    Paul

  • Dear Paul,

Where are you going to in Dongguan?

    Air

Dongguan City is located in the Pearl River Delta, China’s prosperous region with concentrated international airports. Though there are no airports in Dongguan, travelers can have easy access to airports of neighboring cities, with convenient transportation. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport are about 60 kilometers (37 miles) to the north and south. Zhuhai Sanzhao Airport and Hong Kong International Airport are about 100 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. Shuttle buses are available from hotels across Dongguan to all the airports mentioned above.

For going to Hong Kong International Airport, travelers can take a ferry at Humen Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal (虎门港澳客运码头). Check out more information.

    Rail

Dongguan serves as one of the railway hubs in Guangdong Province, as it is the point where Guangzhou-Kowloon Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway and Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway converge. Railway transportation is convenient for getting to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and some major cities in China. Travelers can also use the neighboring Guangzhou Railway Station and Shenzhen Railway Station.

There are two railway stations in Dongguan, which are Dongguan Railway Station and Dongguan East Railway Station. Both are located in Changping Town, about 1 hour drive from Dongguan city center.

Dongguan Railway Station serves for short distance trains to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Dongguan East Railway Station serves for long distance trains to many big or medium cities in China, including Beijing, Nanjing, Chengdu, Qingdao, Changsha, Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Xiamen, Shantou and Nanchang.

    Dongguan Railway Station Tel: 0769-86296476
Dongguan East Railway Station Tel: 0752-5824372

    Highway

Dongguan City has a highly developed and convenient highway transportation network. There are buses to Hong Kong, Macau and major cities in China and within Guangdong Province.

    Dongguan Central Bus Station 东莞汽车总站
Buses to: Foshan, Chaozhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and cities in Fujian Province (Xiamen) and Guangxi Province (Guilin, Nanning).
    Getting there: Public bus No.3
Address: At the intersection of Si Huan Road and Xin Wan Road, Qu Hai community, Wanjiang, Dongguan (万江曲海社区四环路与新万道路交汇处)

Dongguan Nan Cheng Bus Station 东莞南城汽车客运站
Buses to: Macau, Foshan and Guangzhou
    Getting there: Public bus No 27, 40, 50, 66, 77, 105
Address: No. 99, Hongtu Road, Nancheng District (南城区宏图路99号)

    Local Transport

The most convenient way for getting around in Dongguan is by taxi. The flag-fall price is 8 yuan plus 1 yuan as the fuel surcharge for the first two kilometers. Travelers can also call 23012345 for taxi. This service number is open round the clock.

    Thanks,

  • Maria
